Après sa défaite lors de la bataille de Loro (12 janvier 1864), où il perd une partie importante de son armée, Lat-Dior se sent affaibli. Face à la puissante armée française qui le traque, le roi du Cayor décide d’adopter un repli stratégique qui va le mener en exil. Alors que le royaume du Sine lui ferme ses portes, c’est la terre du Saloum qui lui offrira son hospitalité. Ainsi à partir du 8 février 1864, jusqu’en 1869, Lat-Dior vivra en exil auprès de Maba Diakhou Ba.
A cause des rivalités profondes entre Lat-Dior et le Damel Madiodio Dééguéne Codou, le royaume du Cayor se retrouve déchiré. Cette situation va aboutir à une guerre pour le trône, d’où le premier nommé sortira vainqueur à Coki en janvier 1862. Bénéficiant du soutien des Blancs qui ne font pas bon ménage avec Lat-Dior, Madiodio sera rétabli dans ses fonctions de Damel d’abord par le gouverneur Jauréguiberry puis par Faidherbe malgré le fait que les Grands Electeurs du royaume aient jeté leur dévolu sur son rival. C’est dans ce contexte qu’interviendront les batailles de Ngolngol en décembre 1863 et de Loro un mois plus tard, en janvier 1864.
Après la défaite dans cette dernière bataille, Lat-Dior s’exile au Saloum, accueilli par Maba Diakhou Ba. Avec le roi du Djolof déchu, Alboury Ndiaye, les trois résistants vont joindre leurs forces dans une seule armée pour faire face aux colons. C’est à partir du 8 février 1864 que le roi ceddo va résider auprès de l’Almamy Maba Diakhou Ba en ayant accepté au préalable de se convertir à l’islam. Il s’y établira de 1864 à 1869, deux ans après la mort de son hôte à la bataille de Somb, le 18 juillet 1867.
